The Mamertines (Latin: Mamertini, "sons of Mars", Greek: Μαμερτῖνοι) were mercenaries of Italian origin hired by Agathocles (361 – 289 BCE) of Sicily. Many stayed in Sicily, taking over the town of Messana and becoming pirates on land and at sea.
