Diane d’Andoins
In the Essays of Michel de Montaigne

Diane d’Andoins (1554–1621), Countess of Guiche, was the wife of one of Montaigne’s friends, Philibert of Gramont. After her husband’s death, in 1580, she became an important literary and political figure in Gascony and France, in part through her support of and relationship with Henry III of Navarre, the future Henry IV of France. She is often referred to, including in the Essays, as Corisande, her literary nickname.
